COOL CRAFTY CLIPS

Was surfing some and came across some simple ways to create cool stuff. So if you have these things lying around, go ahead give it a try.

SOCKS GALORE

Each time I go away, I usually come back feeling inspired to create toys and my head will be spinning with ideas I want to try. But by the time I get back and start work again, all the ideas get KIV for when I have time to pursue them maybe over the weekend (which hardly happens).

I realised I was most productive when I was unwell and had to stay at home for two glorious weeks and I ended up making my most favourite pieces then!! I definitely have to find a way to manage my time better. So, if you have any idea of how I can juggle a regular job with a hobby that I am passionate about, please share cuz I am all ears.

Anyways, two weeks away in UK and my best souveniors that I got for myself are these awesome super yummy socks!! I can just imagine the sock monkeys that I am going to make from these socks!! It was quite embarassing for my colleagues who were wit me cuz I was wowing and ooohing and ahhing each time I saw them socks to a point where they started looking out for these socks before me so that they could point them out to me and wait for my ooohhs and ahhhs. Thanks for being so patient with me!! :o)

These are just a sample of the whole range that I got so you will have to wait for the finish products to see exactly how many socks I got.

I was out today walking about and saw a shop that sold goodies for children and what caught my attention was the many handmade toys for children. It was nice just browsing and admiring some of the cool toys that were made from different fabrics like leather and felt, some with a touch of glam with beads and sequins.

But after a while of checking the labels (to see where the toys were from), I realised that all the toys were brought in from overseas and have expensive labels to match the toys. I acknowledge that the toys are of good quality, no mass produced plastic toys made in China that will fall apart the moment you take the toy out from its box (this happened to me recently so am still sore about it). So I asked the lady at the shop who was busy unpacking things (shop is newly open) if she carried anything made by local artisans. And her reply was, "No, our handmade toys are all from overseas". That was said with such arrogance that I was speechless for a while and could only reply "Oh, I see". I placed back a felt toy that I was hold onto it's rightful place and I left the shop. I felt that I didn't belong in that shop and maybe I am being too sensitive about things (could be that time of the month) but I got the impression that if I am not from overseas myself, I shouldn't be buying anything there. I am sure that wasn't the intention of the shop (cuz money from anyone is welcome I am sure) but that was MY impression.

It's very sad to see that till today, there are still people who think that toys made in the western world are of the best quality. With cheaply made poor quality products coming out of China, I guess I don't blame the majority for thinking that. But I have been to Thailand and see beautiful handmade toys which are of outstanding quality. And I am sure in other parts of Asia, if we look hard enough, there are such toys which are usually catering to a small group of the market cuz the majority are still looking for cheap toys (cuz kids-grow-out-of-their-toys-so-quickly logic) I see toys made in Singapore with high quality too. I would like to think that my toys are made lovingly and of the same standards of those toys sold in that shop.

Would I want my toys to be sold in that shop, I asked myself. No. I want my toys in a shop that is able to appreciate good quality handmade toys regardless where the toys are made.

Excuse my ramblings in this post, but am at Coffee Bean right now washing away that unpleasant taste in my mouth from that experience with a delightful cup of Malibu Dream (no whip). And I am thankful that there are still people (including lovely Singaporean friends who have been supporting things handmade in Singapore) out there who appreciates handmade toys. Just wish there were more of us ....

TOYS IN STAMPS

Although this blog is meant for toys that I make, but occasionally, I might add some post on issues or topics related to toys. I recently went to the Singapore Philatelic Museum and ended up ploughing through heaps of first day covers and come across some cool stamps with toys on them.

I used to collect stamps when I was in school and you can learn so much about the country's culture, festivals, flora and fauna and much much more just from stamps. And I guess I got all nostalgic and decided to rekindle an old interest and start collecting stamps again, but this time with the focus on toys. Maybe from these stamps, it will give me more insights to toys, either from the past or present, of the countries the stamps are from.

So here are some of what I managed to gather from my trip there, and I suspect there will be many more trips to the museum when I'm in the area.

TOYS FROM THE HEART ...

Some weeks back, Robyn from Craft with Me came across my Sock Monkeys and invited me to be a guest crafter and do a tutorial for the sock monkeys. I have never done a tutorial before but was excited by the challenge and agreed. It took me quite some time to compIete tha tutorial but it was a fun experience for me and I hope others will have fun making sock monkeys from my tutorial. Thanks Robyn for the invite and trying out the tutorial to test it out :o)

And today, I also found that my Flower Gals have been featured on Softies..cuties.., a blog with news and link relate to soft and cute stuff. I enjoyed reading the blog as they are lots of super awesome softies featured on that blog.

PAOLO THE GONDOLIER

As a tribute to the lovely and very skilled man who took care of us and drove us from one place to another safely while we were on tour in Italy. He was like a gondolier in a sense that he had to steer through sometimes rather narrow roads with cars parked haphazardly yet that didn't disturb him a single bit as he manoeuvred the bus as we all held our breath.

I had this idea for the gondolier while I was in Italy and tried looking for the stripey socks whilst I was there but didn't come across any. Thankfully, found some here! Am in the midst of making some more gondolier friends to keep Paolo company!

WORK IN PROGRESS

I have an idea for a new sock monkey that I have been toying with for the last few weeks and am real worried that I won't be able to find the things that I would need. Yesterday while at the dentist seat, trying to distract myself from thinking about what the dentist is doing (am having implants done), I was thinking about where I would be able to find what I needed.

After my appointment at the dentist, I was walking home and looking at the 'pasar malam' or night bazaar and to my pleasant surprise, I found the socks that I needed. And this is after looking everywhere and not seeing it before. This could be my reward for being very nice at the dentist *laughs*

And now I need to look for one more thing and once I have that, I can start work! So far no luck at Spotlight and Art Friend. Anyone know where I can get accessories for dolls like straw hats? Any help will be appreciate :o)

FRESHLY BAKED CUPCAKES

Back from a holiday after spending two glorious weeks in Italy. That's a definite place to be for artisans cuz they do really wonderful handmade products e.g. wood-inlay products, jewellery from gold or mosaic, glass from Murano and many more.

Anyways, am back and would like to spend more time in 2008 making crafty things. And also, will continue to donate part of Toys From The Heart proceeds to a local charity as part of our way of giving back to society.

For 2008, am starting with these cupcakes which will be making their way to the States soon. They are keychain plushies and can also double up as a pin cushion. This way, you will never loose your keys and pins *grins*

If you can think of any cupcake combination, I can try stitching them up for you so that you'll have your very own cupcake. These can also be used as ornaments to be hung from your bags!

TAKING A LIL SHORT BREAK ...

It's been a great year and am looking forward to more plushie 2008. Thank you those who supported and got my sock monkeys!! More will be on the way for 2008. I am not able to get them out in time for Xmas cuz am taking a long overdue holiday for the next two weeks. But will be back fully recharged and hopefully with lots of ideas for the coming year.

Will also put up and update on how much Toys From The Heart is donating to charity for the second half of the year thanks to your support when I get back. For now, will have to finish up packing my things for my flight tonite.

TIPS FOR BUYING TOYS

Have been doing some research online and putting together advice that I have read from various sites on tips when selecting toys from your children or as gifts. At different stages of their lives, toys serve different functions to help in the development of various aspects of our children, e.g. motor skills, social skills, creativity etc.

I'll share some of these tips in installments and if you have any other advice to add on, do leave a comment and I'll add it on.

For babies from birth to 6 months
Newborn babies for the next few months will not be able to grasp toys with their hands. What you can look out for would be toys that will help to stimulate them through sight and sound. Toys that make noise like rattles or squeekey toys, as well as toys with contrast, black and white toys and even brightly coloured toys will surely get babies' attention. It has also been suggested that you can even start using hand puppets when playing with your babies.

Once babies are able to grasp, you can start looking for toys that has different texture and most importantly safe for putting in their mouths. No toys which have attachments or embellishments. Everything has to be securely sewn on. And if you're getting stuffed animal toys, do make sure that the furry fabrics will not come off if pulled.

Another important tip in ensuring that toys remain safe for the babies, remember that you should never ever hang toys from the crib, stroller, playpen or around babies' necks.

Look out for the next tip for 6 months to 1 year olds!

I am in the process of making more of these sock monkeys and if you would like to customise any, send me an email and I would be happy to do one for you. For example, if you would like to propose to your girlfriend, I can do a sock monkey with both your initials or even one with a diamond ring on his chest so that you can use the sock monkey to bring along the ring and present both to your girlfriend. Or if you have a friend who is having a birthday, I could do one with a birthday cake on his/her chest. There are so many possibilities to personalise a sock monkey. Just let your imagination go wild and let me do the sewing for you! :o)

For Adoption - Four Adorabubble Sock Monkeys

Tada! These are the new sock monkeys that I have been working on for the last week or so. Am totally in love with them cuz they are just oooozzing with cuteness! Each sock monkey is unique, each with their own message that they are bringing to you. Let me introduce you to them (from the left to the right) Peace, Cheerio, Eko and Tesso.

Peace is rooting for World Peace; Cheerio is Mr Don't Worry, Be Happy; Eko is a nature lover who wants us to Save the Earth and Tesso is the King of Hearts.

Each monkey is made from a pair of socks and filled with polyfill stuffing. I used felt for the eyes and symbols on the chests so these monkeys are children safe. They are currently available at Maki Squarepatch and if you are keen to take one home, do drop me an email. They are going for S$60 per sock monkey and 10% from the sale will be donate to a children's charity. So what are you waiting for, take home one before they all get snapped up.

SOCK MONKEYS

Am going to take a short break from sewing cupcakes or flower gals as I sort out my sock monkeys. Am trying to give them a little more exposure so will spend the next few days doing little touch ups and getting them ready for their 'coming out' *laughs*. Am also giving them a unique touch, to make them different from the other sock monkeys out there yet adorable enough to get people to want to take them home :o) So keep a look out for their reveal real soon...hopefully by next weekend!

Have a cupcake...or two!

These sweet treats are definitely a must have. They are sugar-free, gluten-free, egg-free and best of all calories-free yet full of awesome cuteness! I have been intrigued by them cupcakes for a while and since I am rather useless in the kitchen, thought I'll try sewing them instead. I love creating different combinations and if you have a special combination, I can try and 'bake' it for you. They make lovely gifts to friends and family members and can be great for favours or door gifts. However, if you need more than what I have, drop me and email to discuss further.

Now you will never lose your keys again as these cupcakes are keychains. What a fun way to bundle your keys together. And if you're worried of losing your pins and needles, these also work as pincushions. I'm still baking more as these cupcakes take awhile to sew. I painstakingly hand sew most parts of the cupcake so that I have a better control over the stitches on the felt materials that I use. And I slowly stuff them with polyfill stuffing, careful to not over stuff.

These cupcakes measure approximately about 4" by 3.5" and may vary depending on their toping of course :o)

So come on, pick one or two of these cupcakes before they are all gone!!!

Some really cool news that I just had to share. Recently, Deborah from Guileless who makes really awesome jewellery was invited to write about Singapore and the crafting world on this little island for Storque and its been published!! Yay!! GONE BAKING ....

After working on Keera for a few weeks, am now going to take a break from making them Flower Gal dolls for just a wee bit to recharge and get inspired for new dolls :o)

In the meantime, I'll be 'baking' some treats to satisfy my sugar cravings that seems to plaque me ever so often these days. So look out for this space in a few days to see what I have been up too.

ANOTHER FLOWER GAL JOINS THE FAMILY

Was stuck with this new addition to the Flower Gals Series for about a week as I was looking for the right buckle to match her outfit but after scouting around a few places, I couldn't find what I wanted. And after much thought, decided to go for a slightly different look and yes, am happy with her new look. And who is she? She's Keera who now joins Tisha, Jade and Indie and will be placed in my Etsy Shoppe if you would like to take her home. You can either email me if you're interested in Keera or go through etsy. Am pretty flexible :o)

So what's next? Have an idea for another Flower Gal. In the midst of working out how I will be doing her dress and also have to make an important decision...what colour will her hair be. Tuff decision for me so let's see how it goes.

DOING THINGS BACKWARDS

I have a way of doing things backwards sometimes. I am a trial and error kind of person so I like to try first and then read the manual later (which usually means I end up not reading the manual). Same thing when I created my jewelry, mosaic and now sewing my dolls and plushies.

I have created a few dolls / plushies but only recently during my chicken pox 'home arrest' I started ordering some books from Amazon on how to sew dolls. I mean, I know the basics already. But I guess I get these books to see if there are other basic techniques that I need to know about as well as ideas for new toys.

The one book (Making Creative Cloth Doll) that I've flipped through so far is asking me to go beyond my comfort zone and create abstract dolls (free form, free expression...you get the picture) and that's where I get nightmares cuz I don't do free form...period. *laughs*

So hopefully with these books, I'll learn to just let go and figure out this free form free expression thing. Guess it's part of my personal development as a doll / plushie maker.

Might take me a while to get through all these books but am looking forward into diving into these books. Now just have to find some time to catch up on my reading. In the mean time, am working on another Flower Gal Series doll and I think she will be so awesome so keep a look out for her. Am hoping to put up the other dolls on my Toys From The Heart esty shop so look out for updates.

FLOWER GALS SERIES

It has been a while since I made any cloth dolls thanks to being so busy at work. But the last two weeks, circumstances were such that I was forced to stay at home to recuperate and not able to leave the house. And it was a wonderful opportunity for me to catch up and I think creating these dolls helped me recover faster and made my 'home arrest' alot more bearable.

I decided to make these cloth dolls for older girls (at least 5 years and above) cuz I've incorporated my interest in beading into these dolls, just simple ones mind you to give these dolls some accessories.

This is the first one I made earlier and finished up recently. She's wearing a modernised red cheongsam with high slits at the sides. I added the black flower design to her cheongsam. She's also using a strand of bone beaded necklace and matching earrings. All the dolls in this series have pretty flowers in their hair. I was inspired by a girlfriend of mine who looked gorgeous with a flower in her hair the last time we girls met up.

The next one I made is this pretty doll in this very modern baby-doll blouse with knee length pants, looking very casual. She is also wearing a pretty flower-shaped shell pendant.

And my favourite of these three has to be this funky doll with her bright orange hair, green baby-doll dress and knee high orange boots. She is not ready yet cuz I have not found the perfect accessories for her yet.

I am so looking forward to making more of these cloth dolls cuz I have them ideas buzzing around. Once I have a few more, I'll launch them properly as part of my Flower Gals Series. Let me know if you're interested in any of these ladies.

CUSTOMISED ELEPHANTS

Had an order recently for a standing elephant for a little adorable boy who loves elephants. I made an elephant before for my nephew but it was not one that could stand on it's own so this new order was a real challange and I was all up for it!! Spent several days (and nights) figuring out the pattern and did some research and several failed attempts, I finally created one that I absolutely love. I hope that the new owner will like it too :o)

Here's how the toy elephant looks like.

It's slight bigger than the toys that I have made before. And I used mainly cotton for the elephant. I also added the initials of the new owner to personalise his elephant. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to take a picture of the additions before I delivered it.

I'm totally pleased how it turned out. I have another elephant that I helped another talented family member make it. He was also inspired by this 'challenge' and came up with another elephant that's also up for grabs. It's a little more elaborated with trimmings and all.

Am inspired to make another one from an interesting fabric that I have. Hmmm, just need to find time and energy to get started! Am also keep to make a camel that can stand like them elephants. Oooh, just too many toys I want to make and not enough time :o(

FROG PRINCE

I love getting requests for toys because I know these are from individuals who can appreciate toys which are not mass produced in huge factories but rather are looking for one of a kind toys which has been made especially for them. And I usually like to get the customer involved in the making process by providing inputs / feedback so that the end product is what s/he wants. And I usually discuss openly about what I feel might work and what might not work and end up making several versions, and usually end up with that ONE that I think is just perfect. And upon completion of that toy, there is immense satisfaction. I think each time I make a toy that I am happy with, a little of me goes with the toy cuz I put in time and effort into making that toy just right (to me at least). And my policy is simple, if the individual does not click with what I made, it's okay with me. I am sure another person will come by and that toy might 'call out' to that other person instead.

I made the frog prince (see above) for a nice lady who wants it for a little kiddo. Hope she likes how he turned out. I made some modifications as requested so this fella is waiting to be shipped to his new home.

Lil Mermaid

I had alot of fun making this mermaid cuz she's the only one I made and was thrilled by how she turned out. Doughnuts or Gingerbread?

Am busily baking these gluten-free, sugar-free and calorie-free doughnut and gingerbread plushies. Perfect if you're on a diet or want something healthy. Toys at the Fancy Faire

This is a shot of the table with the toys laid out. Didn't have much space cuz the table was small so I will have to look out for display stands that can help create more space vertically. Some of the toys were sold over the last two days. I will be making more gingerbread plushies and some partners for the cat!

Will update the amount raised for the Breast Cancer Foundation (Singapore) once I finalise a few more sale this week. Not as much as I had hoped but it's a start. Thank you to those who supported this cause by making purchases during the Faire.

MED-inspired Sahara.Cat

Was inspired to do this cat as it has been a while since I went for dance class and she's a reminder of how much I enjoyed going with class with my friend. And the gold trimmings look lovely with the dark maroon cloth that I used for the cat. And what's a MED dancer without her veil. There's only one of this and she costs US$40.00.

Wedding Bliss I - Special Edition

Had this in my mind and just had to work on it to make it a reality. It's a special edition and alot of details for both bride and groom. Cassey the Cat

A gorgeous cat that is made from chita from Portugal. Cloth is mainly cotton with felt material used for the face, and polyfill used as stuffing. Comes with a bell that is attached to her with organza ribbon that must be removed if she is to be given to a young child.

This toy is 11 inches long in length and costs S$40 only.

Adorable Sock Monkeys from USA!

These guys are the cutest! They are made from the original Rockford Red Heel Socks and have been lovingly made by some talented people. Thanks to a friend, am bringing these three in for the Faire. At the moment, there are only these three available.
